Cleaning those window blinds

There is a system for cleaning window blinds in your home, here are lots of hints.

If you have mini blinds they will require a lot of care to make them look pretty and clean. If they are properly taken care of, they will also last longer.

Weekly care of the blinds should include dusting. To start, close the blind and let it go all the way down. You might use a vacuum cleaner with a wand and a brush or perhaps a "pronged" mini blind brush or even a soft cloth.

To wash the mini blinds you will need the following supplies: rubber gloves, two sponges or cloths, a scrub brush , and two pails for cleaning water and the other for the rinsing water. You'll need to use the rubber gloves to protect your hands from the cleaning solution.

Start off by putting on those useful rubber gloves. Open the blind and let it hang all the way down. Then wash the slats with a sponge or cloth containing a mixture of warm water and an all purpose cleaner such as pine oil.

Next you will start at the top and wash one or two slats at a time. Fold the cloth or the sponge around the slat and slide it from side to side, thus cleaning both sides at one time. Then you will rinse the slats and wipe them dry so as to not leave streaks. If you have older blinds with tapes you'll need to scrub them with a brush dipped in the cleaner in the pail.

Let the blind hang all the way down until it is completely dry with a towel or newspaper on the floor to absorb any residue from the cleaning solution.

There is another method that some prefer: you can take down the blind and soak it in the bathtub in a cleaning solution but I do find it easier to just leave the blind on the window and clean it as described above. If you have followed these instructions your blinds will look and smell wonderful. You might need to repeat this every three to six months.
