If you are in an area expecting a hurricane, you need to have a plan to set into motion to protect your property as best as possible. The time to plan is before hurricane season, not during. Storms can pop up in a matter of days, and you will need some materials to secure your property that might not be available by that time. The following should be on your list of things to do when a hurricane watch is issued (watch — NOT warning!!)

--Secure outdoor materials or bring them inside. Check mobile home “tiedowns.” Moor small boats or move them to safety. Basically anything that isn’t bolted down, tied down, or otherwise made stationery might not be in your yard anymore after the storm.

--Board or shutter windows to prevent shattering. 3/4 inch plywood works great for this. If you don’t have any boards or shutters available, try to at least tape your windows in an “X” formation on the inside and outside. This will keep flying glass somewhat in one piece, or at least not blowing all over the place and posing a health hazard.

--Wedge sliding glass doors to prevent them from being blown off their tracks.

--Make sure you turn off your water and electricity before you leave if evacuation is required. That way, when you return home you are less likely to be injured by either.

--Place your valuables in a secure area or plan to take them with you. Cover electronic equipment with plastic garbage bags and secure the bags with tape if you are leaving them behind. This may prevent component damage from water.

--Have important papers centrally located so you can take them with you (insurance papers, wedding/birth certificates, proof of ownership for big-ticket items you own,) personal property inventory for claims, and wills.

A little time spent in preparing your property in the event of a hurricane will go a long way toward your peace of mind during this emergency.
