One of the best definitions of luck describes it as "opportunity meeting readiness". This is the secret that the lucky people already know. You can apply this formula to your own life, and optimize your chances of being in the right place at the right time.
Are you ready to be lucky?
The best way to join the ranks of the lucky people is to challenge your daily expectations. What do you expect from life on a daily basis? You’ll be amazed at the effects of simply beginning to organize your life around the idea that a lucky break could come your way any minute. What would you do if you suddenly got the job of your dreams right now? Or if you won an important contract at work that led directly to a coveted promotion? Or met the perfect partner?
Most people are simply not equipped to deal with such good fortune. They're acting under the assumption that their lives will continue along the same lines. Some of the more pessimistic souls are actively waiting for things to get worse. A radical change for the better would, in fact, throw them off-balance, as they’re just not ready for the good things to start flowing into their lives.
Make sure you don't fall into this category. Start getting ready for those opportunities you dream of. Overhaul your working wardrobe, get a better haricut and perhaps an exciting, vibrant new haircolor. Clean up your
apartment and neaten your desk – send out a clear message to the world that you’re ready and waiting for the next opportunity to sail right into your life.
Do you believe deep down that good things only happen to other people? Make a conscious effort to replace these thought patterns with positive expectations, and try to maintain an alert state of mind. Remind yourself (and
others!) that opportunities are all around you and it’s only a matter of time before the right one lands squarely on your desk or in your mailbox!
What does opportunity look like?
What IS the job of your dreams? If you don't have a clear understanding of the concept, how will you recognize it when it's offered to you? You have to be ready to catch the opportunity when it heads directly towards you.
What WOULD you do if you landed that contract with a major client? Are you ready to handle the challenge of the added workload, and the prestige of working with a major national player? Or would you panic as self-doubt fills you, and turn down the chance to fastrack your career into the big league? If you turn down such chances, you’re not only missing prime opportunities, but essentially creating your own bad luck.
Likewise, if you have a conversation with the most fascinating and attractive person you've ever met, would you view this as a passing diversion, a nice coincidence? Or would you have readied yourself to recognize opportunity, and made sure you not only got that person's number, but called them the very same day?
If you're physically, mentally and emotionally ready for your life to get better, you need only pay attention to the opportunities all around you. When you see one you like, grab it with both hands. That's called making your own luck.
